[BTS] Gushing/mini-review: Just finished 'Before the Storm' for the first time last night, and... I'm broken.

I know this is me reacting to an almost three-year-old game, but I figured this was the best place to vent about the ending (that I got, at least). I loved this game, but its ending both warmed my heart and absolutely stepped on it.

I LOVED seeing the montage of Chloe and Rachel at the end, spending those three years together, being girlfriends, hanging out, being the center of each other's worlds and making three years of happy memories together - I'm so glad they showed that to us, I needed it. I would have hated if they just cut to black a bit earlier with some shit like 'To be continued in Life is Strange'.

However, I realised that that's it. That last adorable little montage is the last we see of Rachel happy and alive with Chloe. I've really loved seeing Chloe and Rachel's relationship develop over the game - they've got to be one of the cutest couples in gaming I've ever seen - but remembering what happens in the original LiS just added this huge undertone of sadness for me. Even just what happens to Rachel and not THAT ending with Chloe.

It only makes me more glad we got that little ending montage so we can end the prequel on a happy note instead of just overwhelming foreboding. Basically, I felt like crying from both happiness and sadness, haha. Also, for a little mini review, my overall thoughts on the game are:

    • Main relationship between Chloe and Rachel is just too much for me - adorable, complex, intense, and well-written overall
    • Brilliant voice acting (despite Ashly Burch's absence)
    • Great soundtrack
    • Story has nice twists and turns, good character development, and interesting supporting characters
    • Despite the low graphical power, the actual composition and design of the visuals and environments is gorgeous

    • Story is a bit messier than LiS imo, not everything is followed through on or has the desired impact, and one or two things just feel a little bad tbh

    • Gameplay felt a little bit lacking compared to LiS - there didn't seem to be as much of it, and without the time loop mechanic I didn't find it quite as engaging

    • Obviously, graphics aren't exactly photorealistic

    • Not sure if this counts, but I just wish there was more of it!

I put this as a discussion because I'm open to any thoughts, agreements or disagreements, etc.! I'm now moving on to my second playthrough of LiS, knowing the prequel's story... wish my fragile heart luck.
