[S1] Is Life is Strange a parable to axpressionistic history?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 12:49 AM PST

I have no clue whether this is intentional, or just coincidence. We don't have to argue about Life is Strange being an expressionistic art, because it clearly is. However I would argue that the storyline of the game is a parable to the history of expressionism in Europe at beginning of the 20th century. It was a time littered with insecurity, many countries were gearing up for war, and the apparation of Halley's Comet as an unkwon celestial object on night sky in 1910 lead many people to believe the end of the world was near. Sounds familiar, doesnt it? A lunar eclipse, an unknown celestial object on night sky during the End of the world party.

Expressionists wanted to capture the true feeling of a moment, this manifested in distorted, overcluttered looking paintings, literature that made extensive use of metaphors and poems put together out of verses, which all described one scene as descriptions of ongoing actions. One of these poems is Jakob van Hoddis?oldformat=true): Weltende

    World's End

From burgher's pointy head flies the hat.

    In all quarters resounds hullaballoo.

Roof tilers plummet down and break in two.

Along the coasts—one reads — the floodings rise.

The storm is here, wuthering seas are hopping

Ashore to crush dams as if they were midges.

Most people have a cold that is not stopping.

The railway waggons tumble down from

What is that storm he is writing about? It is a storm of change, a storm that was meant to give society an overhaul for a better future, a return to true idealism. Many artists supportted radical change without fear of starting an armed conflict, many of them thought that conflict was inevitable. And just the way it was predicted history took its course, on Sunday, 28 June 1914, the storm hit shore in Sarajevo, starting a war that would erupt a month later and go on for four years. During that time many artists realised something, they realised that all they caused was just death and destruction. Seems familiar, right?

A small note at the end: I don't think the final decision of the game is meant as an analogy to prohibiting the events of World War I, because that would be highly innapropriate. And all the things mentioned above could only be coincidental. Paintings like The City from George Grosz, which is visually similar to the lunar eclipse setting, exist:

[ALL] after years of playing lis, i finally played bts

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 03:53 PM PST

i've played the first game with max more times than i can count on my hands and feet and i just got around to playing through bts. when i did have the money, it wasn't out and since it's been out i just haven't had the money or time i guess. ridiculous, i know

let me just say it threw me in an emotional rollarcoaster, like all lis games. most of my endings in lis1 were the bay ending; i grew attached to chloe and didn't like the idea of her dying on the bathroom floor without answers regarding EVERYTHING. and in bts, i chose to tell rachel everything because i personally value truth. the ending cinematic of everyone made me bawl my eyes out, especially the part where chloe had been calling rachel while she is in the darkroom ;(

something i would have liked more in bts is more light shed to mr. jefferson. but i do have to admit what little screentime was dedicated to him, the very end of the cinematic with the shutter of the camera, gave me goosies. very ominous :p alongside this, seeing younger nathan was crazy ! out of the sympathy in me, i always felt bad for nathan even when he was a bit of a psycho. his mental illness was misinterpreted by everyone around him, including his parents, which led to him being the way he is i suppose. this works hand in hand with his own choices like drugging girls, working with mr jefferson, etc. but his voicemail to max made me cry also lol. i loved his relationship with samantha but i didn't realize in my gameplay i could give her advice behind the stage + i chose to not help nathan because of what he said to drew. seeing him walk towards samantha at the tree (ending cinematic) though made me upset.. but in the gameplay where she walks away from him, didn't he break her ribs or something ??? anyways 😶

i had started playing lis2 on gamepass for xbox less than a year ago but got about halfway through unfortunately but i'm starting that right now! (all on pc)

I really like Cassidy and yeah I'm basically at a 100% with her.

Finn not so much I let him take a punch lol

Everyone survived which is nice but Daniel got shot and raged. Thats not going to help his anger much thats for sure.

I really wanted to steal the money but I just didn't think Sean would.

What makes it better is that my name is Shawn lol.

I suck at finding these collectibles lol
