[ALL] I don't think Life is Strange 2 was as "political" as most people claim it was

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:06 PM PST

I apologize for this sleep deprivation ramble, but I needed to get this off my system.

So, I know we're all tired of hearing about this, but one of the main criticisms this game seems to receive has to do with its handling of political themes, mainly since it apparently seems to take on a very pro-leftist stance. It should come to no surprise since both its protagonist and deuteragonist are mexican kids... who had their dad unjustifiably murdered by police... and are being pursued by same police for a crime they didn't commit... trying to cross the mexican border... in Trump's America... while dealing with an endless number of racist rednecks along the way. Despite all that, the game still felt politically neutral to me. I'll explain.

According to the devs, the main theme of the game is education. Almost every choice you make in the game, even if they can be justified by the fact that you're trying to survive while living on the strets, has a weight of morality to them. They all mold your 9 year old brother into either a law abiding citizen or a mini Darth Vader who force chokes people and animals. So it's very strange to me that, at the end of the game, the final choice has you deciding whether or not to surrender you and your little brother to the police - the same police who murdered your dad for no reason. With surrending to the police being, i believe, the morally correct choice, since choosing otherwise leads your little brother into becoming some sort of criminal in Mexico. And I can't imagine a bigger demonstration of failure at educating your sibling than them entering a life of crime. Surrending to the police is the only way to guarantee Daniel a peaceful life.

When it comes to the representation of POC, I don't think the game did more than the bare minimum. Sure, yeah, Sean and Daniel are mexicans, but if it weren't for their skin color and last names, you probably wouldn't notice it. They only speak spanish a handful of times (one of those times while being harassed by a racist). They also don't meet many other latino characters along the way, which seems like a waste... their dad is barely around and the only other mexican characters in the game are a couple you meet in jail which is ehhh. Mexican culture is represented but not... celebrated, if the makes sense. Also, most of the supporting cast is white. The grandparents, Chris and his dad, Finn and Cassidy, crazy church lady, Jacob, Karen, Brody... White, white, white, white, white. I guess there's Lyla and her 10 minutes of screentime... Meh.

Anyway, my point is, when it comes to politics, the game to me took a very neutral stance with its main point being barely anything but a surface level racism = bad.

[ALL] for Life is Strange 1

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:22 PM PST

I'm sure this question has been asked a million times but I've never had an answer for it in the 4 years I've loved this game, why didn't Max try and stop Nathan from shooting Chloe without her rewind powers? She could have snuck up on him with that bucket or that hammer and hit him or SOMETHING. Would that still have caused the storm? I know the game is like wrapped around the whole "Chaos Theory" with Chloe having to die in order for like everything to be balanced? Idk I think I heard that in a video once. And sorry if this question has been asked a lot, just wanna clear it up after 4 years lol

[ALL] Chloes thoughts during the audio recording at the end of farewell.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 04:40 PM PST

I watched a video on YouTube that tried to explain this, but for some reason I can't remember finishing it, something must have happened that made me stop watching, and now i cant find the damn video, so it still remains a mystery to me. As max talks, you can see chloe getting more sad, and from her facial expressions you can tell she's in a ton of mental and emotional pain in that moment, but I cant place my finger on why exactly she got sadder as max kept talking and saying "we will keep in touch" and other things to let her know that their friendship is far from over. That moment I couldn't tell what was going on with chloe mentally. Max kept reassuring her that everything is fine but she kept getting more sad. I feel like its in that moment that she should totally be glad that max cares so much about her and is not willing to bail on her no matter what happens. Thoughts on this?.I remember the video saying something like the reason is chloe is getting more sad is because she is scared that max will be on her own in seattle, so this made me more open to the fact that there's so much more to that scene.
