[No Spoilers] How would you write Life is Strange 3?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:09 PM PST

I'd say there are a few key elements that the two main games are based around, that really give them that "Life is Strange" feeling. What would you choose to do with these elements for a third game?

    The Relationship

The main thing that all three games have in common so far is a core relationship. The friendships/relationships between Max/Rachel and Chloe, and then the brotherly love between Sean and Daniel are what really drives both stories, and without them there would be very little left for people to be attached to.

After friends and siblings, the next obvious relationship to follow for me would be a parent-child relationship. This may be too similar to the Sean/Daniel dynamic for some, and I understand that the "babysitting" storyline was divisive, but I feel that the dynamic would change more than you might think. A big part of LiS2 was Sean learning to take on new responsibilities that he hadn't had before, and the strengthening of the brothers' bond as they grow closer. In a parent-child story the authority and unquestioning love would already be there, opening up new directions for the story to take. One angle to separate the stories could be to age up the child, maybe with the main character being the parent of a teenager.

I think a good comparison here would be the transition from Avatar to Legend of Korra, the main characters in the original (besides Iroh) were children, but in the sequel Tenzin plays a central role and adds something new to the dynamic.

This also feels like something the games have been building towards, with David and Joyce playing a small role in the original, and then Rachel's parents being a larger part of BtS, and the brothers dynamic being a proto-parent relationship.

    The Setting

This was probably the biggest difference between the two games, with the small town setting in the original (and BtS) allowing the players to become attached to the supporting characters and the locations, compared to the road trip style of 2 putting more focus on the central relationship and less on the surroundings.

I would probably want a return to the smaller settings, or at least a consistent supporting cast, so I wouldn't repeat the road trip. I think an interesting way to differentiate a new game from the others would be to more things from a rural/suburban setting to a city. This could allow for an interesting contrast between the loud/busy outside settings and the calm inside. It could also mirror the original if the characters have recently moved from a town to a city, instead of the other way around.

    The Supernatural and the Plot

The two main games both had superpowered main characters, with Max having time travel and Daniel having telekinesis. I also find it interesting how it is the player character that is superpowered in 1 but an npc in 2. So a big question for 3 is what power would you include, and who would you give it to?

I feel like the time travel was the more interesting power as it opened up more story possibilities and allowed the player to explore the world and supporting characters more. So I would want the power I include to open up similar possibilities. I would be interested to see mind reading in a sequel. This would allow for a similar exploration of the characters as Max's time travel, and would make for a very unique plot. For a power like this I would give it to the player, since it would feel like the other main character would only be there for exposition otherwise.

I think a good way to work it into the game would be if the villain was somebody untouchable, such as a politician or police chief, and the difficulty was in proving their guilt to others instead of finding it yourself. It could be an interesting subversion of the twist in the original if you knew that it was them all along, and you've set things up so that their big moment of revealing themselves to you is actually when they lose.

Mind reading would also factor into the main relationship of the game, as it could increase or decrease the trust between the characters depending on how you used it, and having one character be unable to lie could make for interesting tension.

Do you like these ideas? What would you do with these elements in a third game, and what else would you want to see in the story?

Would like to know your reason. Doesn't have to be an antagonist, just a character you hate (Rachel/Chloe/Max is accepted)
