[S1][BtS] Reaction from a recent first time player Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:42 AM PDT I've been here long enough to know this doesn't make me special, but I'm looking to see if there's any ways of coping on the end of the first season that I'm missing. See, I'm a dude in my late 30s, so I never expected that playing a game about high school girls that I grabbed on sale to have a lasting impression. I played the first few minutes of the first episode back in 2016 and wrote it off as a Telltale knockoff with an interesting mechanic, which is why I just got around to starting LiS a few weeks ago. I just finished this past weekend, during which I blew through BtS because I couldn't bring myself to care about anything else at the time. It's just coincidence that I wrapped up the first game as the next was announced. So I've been playing video games since the early/mid 80s. Had an Atari before my NES. Lived through the story-rich 16-bit RPG era and played so many of the classics during their heydays. I'm a huge Bioware fan, would protect Clementine at all costs, and…well, rambling way of saying I'm not a stranger to video games, especially ones that overtly play on emotions. I can generally enjoy these for what they are, then move on with my life (and backlog). Then I finally settled on playing Life is Strange, which I had slept on for the past 5 years despite owning it. Frankly, it felt silly playing a high school drama simulator as a grown-ass man. Though, Max has a lot in common with the photographer I dated in college, so it did immediately strike a bit of nostalgia right away. What I wasn't prepared for, was Chloe. See, while I'm now a jaded adult doing boring adult shit, 20 years ago I was a slightly rebellious youth. With a recently deceased father. And financially struggling mother who waited tables at a diner. I even had blue fucking hair for a while back then and drove my dad's beat up old pickup on occasion. That feeling of loss and abandonment was absolutely integral to my development as a person, and it came flooding back and smacked me in the face. Kissing and saving Chloe were easily the fastest two times I've ever smashed any buttons in any of these decision-based games. I didn't play anything for a couple of days, then jumped into Before the Storm. Metal was more my scene than punk, but it certainly didn't lose any of the connection by starting off at a shady local show. A few years before the photographer I dated in college was a drama nerd I dated in high school. So this game kept the nostalgia flowing. Like I said, I blew through this game in a weekend because I could stop. When I played S1, I'd stop for the night after being an episode, read the old reaction threads here from years ago, and then watch some tv or whatever. By the time I was in BtS, I'd read the reaction thread, try to focus, lose interest in whatever else I was trying to do, then jump back in. At the end of Farewell, I couldn't think of anything but how that's her last memory of Max in the clearly inferior Bay ending and how she sounded finding the body in S1. It fucking broke me. I'm not normally especially emotional or prone to tears, so it's very plausible that these two games are responsible for more than half of the tears I've shed over the past 20 years. I've never been one to fanboy especially hard, so lots of this is new territory for me. I ordered (and have already read) the comic box set, with the 4th collection preordered for next month. I've never been interested in fanfic before, but there's a couple that get mentioned here frequently on my bedside Kindle now. And the voice talent in the audio version of Better Then is fucking amazing. I've never understood why game streamers are even a thing, but I've already squeezed watching a full playthrough of S1 in between work obligations this week. And I cried like a bitch again, despite already knowing how it all goes. So, I know this feeling isn't unique to me, and I'm not a total stranger to it (though it's never bit me nearly this hard before). I've got LiS2 and even started on Captain Spirit last night, though I stopped about a half hour in to read a couple of chapters of Ouroboros instead. So I'm not sure how well that'll ultimately click for me. At this point, I'd even be okay if they took a Terminator approach where there's a bunch of mediocre sequels of incompatible timelines, just to have more of these characters in my life. All of my recommendations have come from this sub so far, so I'm asking here: what else is out there to scratch this itch? [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:55 AM PDT For real. On our first playthrough, years ago, we remember giving David all the shit we could, we made him lost his job, we made it so that Joyce would divorce him, we ruined his life in the span of a (in-game) week and even then, even then, he was the one that saved Victoria and Max from Jefferson. Even after all the shit Max had given him, he saved her life. This character taught us to never judge a book by its cover. That as much asshole someone might be, they might be kind. So props to David. 🍻 [link] [comments]
[NO SPOILERS] The lack of the painted art style in True Colors Posted: 25 Mar 2021 12:33 PM PDT While I was very pleased with pretty much everything I saw from True Colors, one thing that really disappointed me was the lack of the iconic painted art style the series has been known for. It's still kind of there, but drastically toned down in comparison to the other games. In some parts it looked more like Twin Mirror than a Life is Strange game. This is really disappointing to me as one of the main things that made Life is Strange unique was it's art style. It made the world seem a bit cartoonish but also had a touch of realism with it's visuals. I'm also not a big fan of the cover for the game. LiS1, LiS2, and even Captain Spirit had the main characters painted on the cover, while for True Colors it's literally just Alex's in-game model doing the iconic hand pose and to me it just comes across a bit lazy. I think this is also why so many people are comparing this game's visuals to The Sims as it's lost what made the other games stand out from an art style perspective. [link] [comments]

[No Spoilers] Age of the True Colors Cast Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:57 AM PDT Something I've been thinking about recently. It's interesting to me that Deck Nine decided to go in a different direction from Max/Sean/Chris and the cast in general in terms of age as everyone we've seen in Haven Springs, thus far is an adult. Now, this does bring the games more in line with the typical gamer demographic these days, and probably the fan base (certainly me). I mean Steph has to be in her Mid-late Twenties, I believe I saw a comment here saying she should be 27 in 2019, which seems to be when True Colors takes place, based on the calendar we saw, and precedence. [ALL] Scattered thoughts after completing Life is Strange 2 for the first time Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:25 AM PDT I love Life is Strange and Before the Storm , and took a while to get round to playing Life is Strange 2 because none of the characters were gonna carry over, but I've finally done it. It's much better written than the first two games which is a positive and a negative. I appreciated the more mature and thoughtful story, but a lot of the charm and fun of the Arcadia Bay games went with the immature, cringey cheese. Although, they were clearly aiming for a change in tone, so it's not too big of a deal. I loved a lot of the new characters, especially Brody and Chris and Cassidy, but felt a little disconnected from them because of the road trip format. Having weeks between chapters and setting them in different places made it feel like my choices weren't all that important. Characters will bring up stuff I did, but most of the consequences came through the diary or letters which came off as a little underwhelming. I would've had Brody, Chris, Cassidy, and Karen join up with Sean and Daniel, but I again understand that wasn't their intention. I couldn't stop rolling my eyes during chapter 4. The whole Christian cult thing is so played out and the chapter unfolded in the most cliche way possible. The stuff with Karen redeemed it a little, but not much. Daniel is the worst character in the game. I get that he's a nine-year-old with superpowers in an unfortunate situation, but I couldn't help being constantly annoyed by what a whiny bitch he was, especially during chapters 2-4. I just felt as if every major conflict was Daniel making some dumbass decision that Sean was stuck with cleaning up. I understand that was probably the intention, but I just couldn't deal with him. Really enjoyed the callbacks to the first game. Brody gesturing to Arcadia Bay and proclaiming it was in the past was a fun nod and I was not expecting to see David in Chapter 5. It's nice that he finally found somewhere to be happy and that he'd grown into a decent person. I'm sure I'll think of more points later. Overall, I still enjoy the first two more, but LiS 2 was definitely a fun ride and doesn't deserve its reputation as the black sheep of the franchise. [link] [comments]

[ALL] Some questions about Life is Strange for you. Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:37 AM PDT I played LiS back in late 2015/early 2016, don't exactly remember, but I quickly fell in love with the game. I never got around to playing BtS, I was turned off by the voice-cast change, lack of powers and the smack-talk mechanic, but I think I'd want to play it since I really love the world of Arcadia Bay, and I want more of the world. Never played the sequel either, the story/characters didn't gel with me as much, and I thought some of the political messages were a bit too unsubtle at times. I have watched multiple playthroughs for both though, so I know what happens. LiS has been on my radar recently due to the new game trailer, for some reason my lil' brain never thought to check for a LiS Sub. But I'm wasting time, onto the questions. 1) What moment in LiS had you sold for the game? For me, I saw some youtuber on my feed had a vid about the first ep, so I checked it out, I think I was mildly interested initially, but nothing crazy. It was when max leaves class, and the music swells in the halls that I started really feeling it. LiS has a pretty litty soundtrack that I fell in love with, adding to this rich, school atmosphere and unique art-style. I also really enjoyed just the calm moments in front of the school just chatting people up. Made me immediately hop on steam and grab it. 2) Is Max meant to be "traditionally attractive'' in-game? It can be hard to figure out these sorts of things since we don't exactly know what the characters look like. In things like anime, or even live-action media, all the characters/actors are either neutral, or attractive unless specifically unattractive. In the end they show pics of Max and Chloe that are meant to look more realistic, but don't really look like their in-game counterparts. I doubt Max is a ''Big Uggo'' since Warren is clearly into her, and maybe Hayden, though he's probably just being friendly. Only a few characters off the top of my head are said to be explicitly attractive like Dana, Rachel and Mark, Jeffry's son. Poor Alyssa is said in graffiti to be unattractive, but then again, that may just be because she's plus-sized. You can only tell so much by looking at them, they all have clear complexions, so who knows. Maybe Max is good looking, but just a big, unfashionable, awkward dweeb to other people. It doesn't really matter, I'm just curious. Is Chloe attractive? What about Victoria, Nathan, Warren, Kate ect...? 3) What are some flaws for you in LiS? I burned through the game in a few days, always waking up excited to play again. I initially never really hooked up with Chloe or anything since I liked their strong friendship, maybe I kissed Warren, I don't remember. I sacrificed the Bay, but really didn't feel the ending. I replayed it to get all the achievements since I missed a bunch of photos, and noticed that the "lip-sync" was hella garbo, but that's a minor gripe since I didn't notice it in my first play-through, and unless I really focus on it, I forget about it. Some of the dialogue can be a bit much if I'm to believe that these are teens, especially the way Chloe unironically talks sometimes. I didn't hate the final chapter, but that big nightmare sequence did feel like a lotta fluff at times. I've watched others play through the games, and absolutely dunk on them, with in my opinion valid and invalid criticisms, but regardless, I'll always love LiS. I'm very aware it's far from perfect if you start digging into it, but I think that's trumped by how it makes you as an individual feel, which may sound dumb, vague and like a cop-out sort of opinion. But I genuinely believe that to be the case. 4) What's the demographic for LiS? I'm a straight dude, but I have a sneaking feeling I may be in the minority, though I don't honestly know. None of my friends have ever played it. Most of my friends aren't into vidjya games, the ones that are are all males who predominantly play FPS games, my females friends don't play video games. And I never really got involved in the fandom, so I can only make assumptions. I've noticed this game seems to have a strong shipping community, for better or worse. I never was into that sort of thing, and in Max and Chloe's case, I prefer them as best friends, though I don't hate them as a couple, I think the game could have developed the romance aspect of their relationship more, same with Warren and Max I guess. I don't really like how some people how people make this game out to be a game about Max and Chloe's big, fat lesbian relationship being a huge focus when imo, that's more of a minor thing. Max can be a lesbian who is coming into her own (maybe she doesn't actually like Jefferson, but is still finding herself sexually), Bi ( the most likely imo), straight, but coming into her own (but finding herself, and at a bi-curious phase with some Chloe stuff). Maybe she's Pan, or something else, it doesn't really matter imo, again, I think the romance stuff is not really a huge theme, and it's more about platonic friendship, but that's just me. I sorta went off on a tangent there for a bit, so sorry about that. 5) Did you cry? I'm sure I cried quite a few times, or at least got choked up and teared up. Moments with Chloe in ep 4 hit me hard, moments with Kate and the ending as well. But these are my questions, would love to hear what people's answers are. [link] [comments]

[No Spoilers]Why do people make everything about shipping? Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:06 AM PDT You can't discuss any characters, interpretations, friendships and relationships without someone screaming pricefield and the other amberprice. Was it always like this? Or was it maybe even worse when bts came out? This toxic shipping ruins so much. You can't talk about Lis 2 or BtS without someone saying how much they hate it and how their ship isn't prominent enough. Even when that's not the topic of discussion? Are there any discord groups or something where people are more chill about others opinions? I really love this franchise but this black/white thinking is sucking the fun out of it.
