[ALL] After seeing fan reaction to The Last of Us Part II, I’m kind of glad we didn’t get a direct sequel with Max and Chloe

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I won't get into spoilers for TLOUII, but I was severely disappointed by its brutally violent and nihilistic story especially compared to the first game.

Honestly, I'm glad Dontnod left Max and Chloe's story alone. I understand how some fans feel; the first game is my favorite game and I didn't love Life is Strange 2, but I still thought it was the best direction the series could have gone in.

If we had another full game, we have to have conflict, and in order to have conflict the characters have to face hardship to some extent. The last thing I'd want is (if we had a post-sacrifice AB ending sequel) Max losing Chloe anyway after all she did, or something equally horrible. I'll take their quick but happy cameo in Life is Strange 2 over a full game of them suffering any day.

After seeing what TLOUII became, I hope some LiS fans can now finally see the potential downsides to a direct Max and Chloe sequel.

[S2] Just finished Season 2. What a ride...

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 07:55 PM PDT

I apologize for the length of this post. Just got a lot of thoughts swirling through my head that I want to get down.

I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 and Before the Storm, so I had pretty high hopes for Season 2. It thoroughly met, if not completely surpassed them.

The theme of superheroes is explored pretty heavily throughout Life is Strange Season 2, especially in Episode 2 and the accompanying Captain Spirit bonus level. So, as cheesy as it might sound, I was reminded of Uncle Ben's famous advice to Peter Parker; "With great power comes great responsibility."

That's the approach I took towards teaching Daniel. I thought it was imperative for Sean to teach Daniel to understand that his power, wherever it came from (I don't think its origins were ever disclosed, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong), isn't something to be played with, but rather something that required great care. I taught him that despite the potential destructive nature of his powers, it should only be used to inflict harm as a last resort. While I was obviously upset by Mushroom's death at the hands (paws?) of the cougar, I intervened to prevent Daniel from killing it in Episode 2. I scolded Daniel for toying with the scorpion in Episode 5. Even though I was supremely pissed off at them, I didn't use Daniel's powers to get revenge on the trigger-happy racists at the border. And when escaping the police station, I encouraged Daniel to utilize his powers in non-lethal ways. There were probably more instances of this, but those are the first that came to mind.

Whenever I had the opportunity to do so, I instructed Daniel to hide his power, and to only use it as a last resort. Admittedly, my decisions in Episode 2 may have left Daniel feeling a little confused; I reminded him of the rules and scolded him for using his powers to make Chris believe he was the one with powers, only to then instruct him to use his power to lift the bookshelf off of Stephen. But I digress.

So, at the end of Episode 5, with Sean and Daniel sitting in the truck facing the police blockade, mere miles away from freedom, the option seemed clear. I chose to surrender, and Daniel agreed.

Considering all the events and choices that led up to that moment, it seemed entirely uncharacteristic to order Daniel to go on a murderous rampage, even if it was the only option separating them between them and their longtime destination of Puertos Lobos.

Sean was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his connections to various crimes, and Daniel went to live with Claire and Stephen in Beaver Creek.

Seeing Daniel grow up through the pictures shown in the end-game cut-scene was bittersweet. It reinforced my thinking that I had made the right decision, but it killed me to know that the brothers spent 15 years apart. Following the trauma of their father's death and their life on the road, Daniel finally found peace and normalcy. He grew up with Chris right next door, graduated high school, got a job, and got his own place. In my opinion, this is the far better ending for Daniel compared to his low morality ending.

Sometime after Sean's release, he and Daniel decide to camp overnight at Beaver Creek Trail at the very same spot their journey started all those years ago. Daniel is lively and animated, presumably discussing the going-on's in his life or future plans, while Sean sits stoic by the fire. Suddenly, his emotions gets the best of him, and he holds his head in his heads as the tears begin to fall. Daniel, once vulnerable, assumes the role of the protector, and holds his older brother in consolation. When I tell you this broke me, it's an understatement.

For me, this was the best possible ending. In all games like this where you are responsible for a younger, vulnerable character (The Last of Us, The Walking Dead, etc.) everything I do is for the good of that character. Likewise, the way I played it, everything Sean did was for Daniel's sake. Like he said in his interview with the border patrol officer towards the end of Episode 5, he did what he had to do to protect Daniel. Every dollar was earned and saved with Daniel in mind, and their new life in Puertos Lobos. So it seemed crystal clear to me that, despite it was an option to get through the barrier by force, that would not be providing the best life for Daniel. The best life would be with his grandparents where he'd have some sense of normality.

While it wasn't a completely happy ending, it's the one that brings me the most peace.

Sorry for rambling! Just a fantastic game that I've wanted to talk about for awhile, but didn't really have anyone in my life to talk about it with. I'm more than happy to discuss this ending (and anything else about the game), so please, don't be shy to share your thoughts! :)

[No Spoilers] Do you think the DONTNOD devs take notice of the fact that even now, the vast majority of content posted here is Max & Chloe and not Sean & Daniel?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 03:49 PM PDT

I played through LiS 2, once. It is fine, I suppose. I know it has its fans but its no secret that most people just connect with and care more about the LiS 1 characters. That's my observation based on the huge amount of posts, fan-art and screenshots from LiS 1 and the comparatively tiny amount you see referencing LiS 2.

Even just financially, DONTNOD as a company would make far more money refocusing on Max & Chloe. I wonder if they're kicking themselves that they declared the LiS 1 story to be done, over with. Would it be such a bad thing if they just bit the bullet and said "Yeah, we were wrong to dismiss those characters, we're bringing them back."

[All] My overall thoughts on episode one of before the storm (please do not spoil e2 or e3)

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 05:49 PM PDT

First I would like too apologize how long it took me too complete this I work and shit so it's kinda held me back from playing it the last few days but anyway let's begin, Holy shit the level of charm this game has is fucking incredible "Nice Rachel we're having" that shit cute af lmao and Rachel ambers voice actor is actually perfect the level of emotion she can show just from her voice I'm actually crazy impressed especially at the end during the burning tree scene but let's talk about the elephant in the room does Rachel amber have powers? For me so far No it just seemed like a cool visual effect they wanted to do tbh but I've only played the first episode so if there's more stuff like that I might be convinced but, for now no go from me. I can't shake this feeling that Rachel is using Chole for some reason but that could just be my damaged ass. My final thoughts overall I'm really really enjoying this one it doesn't have as much stuff it has to cover as s1 or s2 so it seems like they really had fun developing there relationship and unlike the other games not one time have i been playing this and been like "okay that's filler" yet, witch I think has been a real problem with lis games around episode 4 but tbf I haven't completed this one yet witch makes me wonder if this could be a permanent thing for the series I would be cool with it quality > quantity imo S1 E1 overall grade: -A really really enjoying this and can't wait to play and write about it more there are some minor face reconstruction problems etc but nothing that's going to kill your whole experience highly recommend especially for the price keep a lookout for my E2 thoughts much love

    [All] Non-canon AU/ Head-canon for you.

This is spoilers for BTS E3/ LIS1 E5.

AU: After Max chooses to save Arcadia Bay, we see the scene but Chloe is self-aware about the fact Max time traveled: but it is too late... she is shot.

She appears on tracks. She is now back to when she was fifteen. (BTS). She later learns that she has time powers, similiar to Max's but she can fast forward, not back.

Simitaneously, Max and Arcadia Bay are safe. Chloe manages to her and Rachel to that timeline. Max, Chloe and Rachel all live together happily. In Arcadia Bay.

HC/ AU: In BTS, we learn that Rachel and Nathan hang out. So maybe he feels remorse for her and lets her go. What about Mr J(ackass)? Well, Nathan tells him what we just drugged her too much.

What about the body in the junkyard? Fake, doll. Nathan is crazy rich.

Where is she? Secretly looking for Chloe.

What about Chloe and Max? In here, Max chooses to save Chloe. They get messaged by Rachel, who is worried because of the storm (news). Rachel tells that what happened. And they decide to trust that person who has been texting Chloe. Max, Chloe and Rachel all live together happily. On the road.

LIS is dark... Just some stuff to lessen the darkness.
