[NO SPOILERS] Miss Life is Strange 1? Try The Longest Journey and its sequals!

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 03:09 AM PDT

The Longest Journey is my favorite game of all time. I played it first when it came out and then replayed it 3 or 4 years ago. Ever since I first had my experience with it, I was looking for something similar... with no luck. I finished about 50 adventure games in those 3 years, and while I enjoyed those a lot, they were never quite the same. Until I tried Life is Strange.

It's a bit different gameplay and even though they both could be considered adventure games, The Longest Journey is much more of a classic point & click adventure game (and quite a bit harder) while many p&c adventure game enthusiasts would probably dismiss Life is Strange for the "lack of game", putting it in a category of a "interactive movie" or something. In fact, that's why I overlooked this game for so long.

But the gameplay is not why I enjoyed The Longest Journey so much. Many games have exactly the same gameplay, but very few have the same atmosphere and depth of the world.

What I missed the most in all the other adventure games I found in Life is Stange. The first thing that I found so much similar is that both games are as big as you want them to be: you can rush through them, or you can go around talk to people, investigate the surroundings and fully emerge in the game-world.

They have very similar pacing. In The Longest Journey you start with going to art school to finish a painting, you go to a a cafe to work, to collect your paycheck. It doesn't throw you directly into the adventure but allows you to discover the world. Somehow similar to Life is Strange where dispite all the weird stuff going on, Max still has school and school drama to worry about. I love the option to take a break from everything and sit down and just think about stuff.

The atmosphere is also very strong in both. I found Life is Strange to be much more melancholic, but they both share the same vibe.

And lastly, I really loved the characters. When I finished The Longest Journey, I felt like I said farewell to a good friend. I'm in S4 of Life is Strange and I already fear to complete it for the same reason... So if you miss Max, you might find the protagonist of The Longest Journey, April, to be quite similar... In fact they are so strikingly similar, April could be Max few years later. Obviously in a different setting and with different background, but their character and even appearance is very much alike.

If Life is Strange is your favorite game, The Longest Journey will not quite be the same, I know. It was like that for me but the other way around. But these two games for me are both very special, and I think you might find that specialness in The Longest Journey as well.

I just want to leave you with a playlist of The Longest Journey cafe jukebox. I used to spend hours there just listening to these songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH4h_qVB2j8&list=PLF3C708F2AD83CE6A

IE Steph can mention that she either left a few months after her graduation from Blackwell, when she felt she had to do something with her life. So Steph packs a bag and leaves Arcadia Bay around 2011 or so, eventually coming to either visit her old folks only to find out Chloe was murdered, or exits her car/the bus she took to see a destroyed Arcadia Bay.

    I don't know, I'm just tossing darts at a board I guess.

[No spoilers] An idea for a Life Is Strange game.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 05:22 PM PDT

It's not that original, but it worked time and time again, amd might be fun. Check out the movie "The Map Of Timy Perfect Things", it's one the many Groundhog Day ripoffs, but a pretty good one. Likable actors, good music, overall LIS vibe, some feels, I really liked it. Definitely check it out if you like LIS. So, why not make a LIS game where you are in a time loop situation? Small town, murder mystery, open world, you're free to explore, get to know colorful characters. Rules are the usual, you wake up at the same time every day, and the clock resets later in the evening, when something happens, or the killer kills you. You gather info, new dialog options with characters open and so on. Branching narrative is at play of course, some scenarios lead somewhere, some are just fluff. Of course Max's power is very similar and effect is immediate, but I think classic Groundhog Day in an open world, where small group of well-developed characters have their own schedules that can be influenced might be really interesting.

[BtS E1] Should I keep playing Before the Storm ?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 06:31 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I was initiated into Life is Strange by a fellow redditor back in september. I played the game, loved it very much and inteded to play it's sequels and spin-offs but then I got into other games and kinda put it on hold. Flash forward to today, I saw that BTS was at just 3€ and I decided to go for it. I knew hardly anything about this game (because I like to go in blind) but I had seen the cover art and thought the protagonist was Chloe.

So I start the game and I first hear her talk, expecting Ashly Burch's Chloe voice. But the voice is different. And my first thought is "Oh! So this isn't Chloe. Ok". Then get into the place were the concert takes place and I see Frank, and I went to speak to him. And not only is Frank's voice different but I find out that she is in fact Chloe. I went online and saw that Ashly did not voice Chloe in this game. I thought that this was a bummer, but I continue. Then when I am home, I see that both Joyce and David have different voices and my enjoyment of the game just stopped. The world I knew and was so fond of was just different, and it kinda felt like Fanfic, where they can't get the actual actors to the roles. This might be a petty reason, but I associate characters with certain voices and this just felt disjointed from the original game. The great voice acting was one of the best things in LiS and here not only is it different but also it seems worse.

So my question is: Should I suck it up and keep playing because the narrative is really worth being experienced or should I give up on the game and maybe try LiS 2 because it doesn't feature already established characters as characters?

    Thank you for your attention.
